— Remembering Ukraine and Russia & An Appeal for Relief Funds for Ukraine

We have been deeply grieved at what has happened to the people and land of Ukraine due to Russia’s military attack on Ukraine. On websites, I saw many church organizations around the world announce their prayers for and statements about Ukraine and Russia, and I felt our Kyodan also needed to raise our voice concerning this situation. At that time, however, the Kyodan had not made any such plans, so I started thinking about formulating a prayer under the Commission on Ecumenical Ministries. Soon the Kyodan Executive Committee also started to discuss this and decided to introduce “A Prayer for Peace —Remembering Ukraine and Russia” under the Commission on Ecumenical Ministries, with a short statement about the prayer in the name of Hideo Ishibashi, moderator of the Kyodan General Assembly, and to encourage the members of the Kyodan to join in that prayer. The prayer starts with a confession of our sin, because the tragedy in Ukraine was caused not only by their sins but also by human sin in general. We all need God’s forgiveness and to have our human arrogance shattered. We pray for people who have the power of life and death over others and who have chosen the path to war. We pray for the leaders and churches of the world and in Japan. And we pray for the people of Ukraine and Russia whose lives are threatened and who long for peace.

Then, on March 14, the Kyodan Committee on Social Concerns announced “An Appeal for Relief Funds for Ukraine,” responding to a request by act (Action by Churches Together) alliance. Here is the information on the relief funds: https://uccj.org/news/42827.html

As we prayerfully raise relief funds, we will continue to search for what we, as the people of Japan, can do for the people of Ukraine.

「平和を求める祈りーウクライナとロシアを覚えてー」と「ウクライナ救援募金のお願い」

　ロシアによるウクライナ攻撃後、私たちはウクライナの人々とその地に起こった出来事に深く心を痛めています。Webサイトで世界の諸教会、諸教団がウクライナとロシアについての祈りや声明を表明しているのを見て、日本基督教団もこの状況に何か声を挙げるべきではないかと感じました。その時点ではまだ教団として祈りや声明を出す予定はなかったので、まず世界宣教委員会として何か祈りを考えようと思い始めました。ほどなく、教団執行部もこのことについて協議を始め、世界宣教委員会で作成した「平和を求める祈りーウクライナとロシアを覚えてー」に、石橋秀雄教団総会議長の名で前文を添え、教団諸教会にこの祈りを共に祈ってくれるように呼びかけることとなりました。世界に向けて発信することも考え、この祈りは日本語と英語で作成され、3月2日の灰の水曜日に教団HPに公表されました。「平和を求める祈りーウクライナとロシアを覚えてー」の全文（日本語と英語）はこちらのリンク先をご参照ください。https://uccj.org/news/42754.html

　この祈りは私たちの罪の告白から始まります。ウクライナで起こっている悲劇は、単に彼らの罪ではなく、私たち人間の罪によって引き起こされたものだと考えるからです。私たちは皆、人間の傲慢さが打ち砕かれることを、また神の赦しを必要としています。私たちは生死に関わる力を持った人々のために、戦争への道を選び取った人々のために、世界の、また日本の指導者たちや教会のために祈ります。また私たちは、その命が脅かされ、平和を切望しているウクライナの人々やロシアの人々を覚えて祈ります。

　平和の祈りと共に救援募金を呼びかけ、これからも日本で私たちにできる支援を模索し続けていきたいと思います。
