Christmas message for the UCCJ 2025

Christmas in most African countries is very special compare to some western countries. It is a time of joy, celebration, peace and reconciliation. We believe that Christ was born on the 25th of December and, because of that, the Christmas eve is the preparation for receiving the Messiah.
Before the 24th, those who are in the cities will travel to their hometowns to celebrate the coming of the Messiah in order to be part of the family occasions. On the 24th, which is the eve, the community will start the preparation by planting a Christmas tree in from of each house. In the evening, people will sit around the bonfire and the elders will start telling Christmas stories.
In my tribe in particular, the 25th is the day that families use to settle issues and make peace and reconciliation within the families. Others will use the occasion to remember their lost ones and sometimes they cried, and visit the cemetery. On the 26th which is popularly known as boxing day, the children of the community will dress with new dresses and move from house to house to collect Christmas gifts. The Christians will attend church services and after that families will meet together to cook and eat and for those whom they settled their issues will come to eat together as a sign of reconciliation.
Normally each house will buy chicken or if they have their own will kill and use to cook the food. People will exchange gifts within the community.

私の名前はコフィ・ロマリオです。
トーゴ出身で、今はアジア学院でグローバル・ミッション・フェローとして活動しています。
今日は、ルカによる福音書2章13〜14節、そして20節から、クリスマスについてのメッセージを分かち合いたいと思います。
クリスマスのお祝いは、私たちクリスチャンにとって、主であり救い主であるイエス・キリストがこの世に来てくださったことを思い起こす大切な時です。
旧約聖書で預言者たちを通して語られてきたメシアを、人々は長い間待ち続けていました。
そしてついに、イエス・キリストの誕生によってその約束が実現し、世界が待ち望んでいた救い主がお生まれになったのです。
私が選んだこの聖書の箇所では、羊飼いたちが天使からイエスの誕生の良い知らせを聞きました。
彼らはその知らせを信じ、天使の導きに従いました。
そして実際に行ってみると、そこには本当にイエスがおられました。
その時、羊飼いたちは神をあがめ、赤ちゃんのイエスに贈り物をささげ、人々の前で喜びを表しました。
帰り道でも、彼らは神を賛美し、天使が告げたとおりのことを目にした喜びを語り合いました。
この聖書の箇所から、私たちは「信頼」「従順」「喜び」「賛美」を学ぶことができます。
しかし今日、多くの場所でクリスマスは商売やお金、セールなどが中心となり、本来の意味が薄れてしまっています。
それはクリスマスの本当の姿ではありません。
クリスチャンにとってクリスマスとは、ビジネスではなく、救い主を与えてくださった神に心から感謝する時です。
つまりクリスマスは、クリスチャンだけでなく、すべての人が、神の憐れみとイエスという贈り物を覚える時なのです。
神ご自身が人となり、罪深い私たちを救い、死から解放してくださった――その恵みを思い起こす時です。
クリスマスはまた、私たちがイエス・キリストに対する自分の献身を振り返る時でもあります。
イエスがこの世を去るとき、私たちに「行って、すべての国の人々を弟子としなさい」と使命を与えました。
クリスマスを覚えるとき、私たちはこの使命を思い起こし、自分がどれほどそれに忠実であるか、またどのようにより良く従うことができるかを考える必要があります。
私たちの生活が神に喜ばれているか、毎日の行いが神の国の働きに役立っているかを、一人ひとりが、家族として、また共同体として振り返る時です。
そして互いに励まし合い、イエス・キリストの犠牲とその誕生を覚えながら、神にふさわしい生き方を目指す時です。
馬小屋で生まれ、飼い葉桶に寝かされた幼子イエスのように、私たちもへりくだり、神のようにお互いを愛し合い、親切にしていきましょう。
