Those of us elected to the Clergy Committee at the 25th West Tokyo District General Assembly last May have planned a two-year study on the theme “Cultivating Clergy Spirituality.” Our first event will be a one-day training seminar atKunitachiChurchonSept. 5, 2012, to be led by Sakon Tomu, chaplain and associate professor atSeigakuinUniversityon “Learning from Prayers in the Old Testament.”
“FollowingMarch 11, 2011, when the comfort and peace acquired to this date through Japanese spirituality, such as a belief in Nature’s eternal cycle of birth, death and rebirth was abruptly questioned, how can the church respond with a biblically based spirituality?” The center of the Protestant church’s spiritual life has always been the Bible, especially the Psalms, which developed the spirituality of the community of faith in the Bible. “Poetry” enables us to express deep suffering while simultaneously expressing rich meaning. The Psalms transcend time and space, cultivating the spiritual lives of believers, which is evident in the well-known Psalms. The Psalms are more than just a compilation of poetry. They directly address the issues of our daily lives and experiences, engaging us in conversation and building us up spiritually. (Tr.WJ)
